Why I have chosen illustration as my career path
Drawing has always been my passion since I can remember; it is so enjoyable and relaxing to do. I used to draw the characters from films like Oliver And Company, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Aristocrats and so many more. When I was at school I used to love going to my art lessons, I was always drawing. I never knew what path I wanted to take in art but I knew that I was going to study it.
I came to Plymouth College of Art five years ago when I was still at school to do work experience. It was then I knew that I was going to be a student at that college. I did a First Diploma in everything associated with art for a year and found another interest of mine which was fashion. I went on from there to do a National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles which I really enjoyed but found that it was not what I wanted as a career path, I wanted to draw more and create unique imagery.
This is when I found Illustration. It was perfect, exactly what I wanted to do. Illustration is so eye-catching. I love the fact that the possibilities are endless with Illustration you can do so much with it, creating very unique pieces. With fashion it is so fixed in what you have to do and you can’t really explore as widely as illustration where you can use whatever style you want, it can be as expressive, as personal as you want it to be. With fashion as an example again you keep to what you have been told and you cannot really elaborate on it as much. With illustration you can bring whatever you want into it, you can go into a lot more depth exaggerating each piece as much as you want. Also your personality or character can shine through onto your drawing which is not always the case. In fashion when you are given an idea of something to make or design you have got to pretty much stick to that, there is more of a definitive line whereas illustration there isn’t, you can go on and add your own input as much as you want or can.
With illustration I love the fact that your final piece can be anything like a sculpture, a painting, just a pencil drawing, it can be digitally created, just black ink, anything you can imagine to use you can.
In am interested in most illustrative roles but what I enjoy the most are children’s illustrations for books for example or films. I like that animated imaginative, dream like look. Something you would see in your sleep maybe. I love this the most because you can do so much more with it, you can create something that no one has seen before because you’re the only person that can see this image, you made it up. That way it is more eyes catching to look at, it draws more people in. For these reasons I have chosen illustration as my career path.
